big Reds

These are the big hitters. They are powerful, full-bodied, concentrated, often with chewy tannins. Many of these in our range are from the right bank of Bordeaux, i.e. St-Emilion, Pomerol, Lalande de Pomerol, Blaye & Bourg, where real value can still be found.

  • Grape Variety: 40% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 30% Mourvedre
  • Comments: Domaine de La Solitude is one of the very finest producers of Châteauneuf du Pape and has been producing wine since 1815. To quote Robert Parker: Over the last ten years, their wines have gone from strength to strength, and are now some of the finest of the appellation. This (2000 Cuvée Barberini) appears to be the most complete wine produced by Domaine de La Solitude since the legendary 1967. This has been aged in perfect cellars at the Domaine itself for all these years, until careful shipment to Singapore in 2010.

Domaine de La Solitude, Châteauneuf du Pape, Cuvée Cornelia Constanza, Rhône Valley

  • Grape Variety: 100% Old Vine Grenache
  • Comments: Domaine de La Solitude is one of the very finest producers of Châteauneuf du Pape and has been producing wine since 1815. The Cuvée Cornelia Constanza should be decanted for 1 hour for maximum enjoyment. Given 96 POINTS by Robert Parker (!) and 18/20 by Jancis Robinson who reckons this is lovely to drink now (which it is!) but, as Robert Parker says, it will drink beautifully for 15-20 years and is a must purchase for those who love old vine Grenache in its unmanipulated, natural, naked glory. Only 5% of this wine is aged in oak, with the rest aged in tank - hence this is an extremely natural wine.
  • Appearance: A very deep red, almost black - opaque
  • Aroma: Huge, fresh, confident nose with masses of black cherry allure. An incredibly intense and intoxicating bouquet.
  • Taste: Displaying all the characteristics of ripe Grenache - notes of kirsch liqueur, raspberries, figs, spice box, licorice, pepper, fruitcake - heady, full-bodied, concentrated and decadently rich although velvety. Oh-so powerful and deep, as Robert Parker puts it. Utterly sumptious wine.
  • Food that it is good with: Duck (with wild mushroom sauce), beef, lamb, stuffed pigeon, game, capon with truffles, chocolate gateau, clafoutis of cherries, comté cheese or similar style of cheese. A wonderful food wine.

This wine is made from two Bordelais grapes, the very well-known Cabernet Sauvignon and the less well-known Petit Verdot. Domaine Madeloc, Collioure Cuvée Serral, Roussillon

  • SGD$40.00
  • Type: Roussillon Red
  • Year: 2008
  • Volume: 750ml
  • Region: Languedoc-Roussillon
  • Quality: Appellation Collioure Contrôlée
  • Grape Variety: 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 5% Syrah
  • Comments: The tiny Collioure appellation lies just across the border from Spain, facing the Mediterranean. The red wines are made mainly from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Pierre Gaillard is a highly revered, ambitious, roving winemaker who produces wine from his own estates in both Languedoc-Roussillon and the Northern Rhone. His aim has always been to produce wines that speak of the land, the terroir. Harvesting is by hand and the wine is matured for 18 months in vats (70 %) and the rest in barrels - oak influence is therefore minimal to allow the fruit and the terroir to shine. An outstanding winemaker, and wine!
  • Appearance: Deep and dark colour
  • Aroma: Intense aromas of red berries, of licorice and of vanilla.
  • Taste: Full-bodied, spicy yet juicy. Melted tannins on the palate. The ripened Grenache offers fig notes on the finish and the Mourvèdre coats the wine with pleasant smoky notes. Easy to enjoy - not at all overdone - with very nice balance. Grenache offers red berry, licorice and caramel aromas. Mourvèdre and Syrah, which are much stronger, contribute structure, strength and complexity.
  • Food that it is good with: Goes well with red and grilled meat, as well as strong cheeses.

La Préceptorie de Centernach, Coume Marie, Roussillon

  • SGD$42.00
  • Type: Roussillon Red
  • Year: 2009
  • Volume: 750ml
  • Region: Languedoc-Roussillon
  • Quality: Appellation Côtes du Roussillon Villages Contrôlée
  • Grape Variety: 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Carignan
  • Comments: Robert Parker, Wine Buyer Guide, 7th Edition. La Preceptorie de Centernach is on the list of best producers in the Côtes du Roussillon. Coume Marie is a big, vibrant, muscular southern French red that really delivers a big bang for its buck.
  • Appearance: Deep, opaque, the core almost black with dark ruby to the rim.
  • Aroma: The nose is intensely dark, spicy and brooding with aromas of dates, fresh figs, plums, herbs, wild fruits and a hint of wood spice. The powerful nose tells the drinker this is a rich, full-bodied wine. Very attractive indeed.
  • Taste: Full-bodied. The palate is rich, full and dense yet elegant at the same time and rounded with noticeable but supple tannins. The finish is very long with lingering notes of spicy black fruits and herbs. One can taste the warmth of the south of France sunshine but this is not over the top in terms of richness of fruit or alcohol - it is exceptionally well-balanced.
  • Food that it is good with: Hearty dishes. Red meats, beef, lamb, pork, salami. Very adept at handling dishes with rich sauces such as mustard, pepper and rich herbs. An excellent wine with grilled, roasted, barbequed meats.
